Cistercian Route

Can you imagine connecting with mysticism and initiating yourself into the study of what were the main cultural centers of the Middle Ages? The Costa Daurada was a radiant centre of culture during this time when a monastic lifestyle, based on work and study, swept through Europe. From France, the order of the Cistercians that was established in our regions arrived. Administrative buildings, hospitals, chapels, craftsmen's houses and farms were built around the monasteries. Currently we can remember this medieval life through the Cistercian Route, a tour of three monasteries, that of Poblet, -listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO-, that of Santes Creus and that of Vallbona de les Monges, the latter already located in the province of Lleida.

Did you know...?

• Poblet continues to have an active monastic community. Men can stay in the monastery and share the daily routine with the monks.
• The monastery of Vallbona has preserved the community of nuns for more than 850 years and offers women the possibility of making spiritual retreats there.
• If you are a true fan of medieval architecture, you should know that the monastery of Santes Creus is one of the largest and best preserved of the Cistercian monastic complexes that exist right now in the world.
