Adernats - Nulles Winery
1918-1919
Architect
Cèsar Martinell i Brunet
Description
After hundreds of years with plantations and family winemaking, the inhabitants of Nulles, during the second decade of the twentieth century, decided to join their resources and knowledge to create the syndicate of Sant Isidre and build the town's winery, the Cathedral of Wine of Nulles. This winery, designed by Cèsar Martinell and built with the help of the members themselves, becomes the result and maximum expression of the effort of a town to carry out a dream, after the great desolation caused by the phylloxera plague.
It is a beautiful two-body building where Martinell exposes part of his architectural language and his fundamental premises when designing works of this type: functionality, a taste for rural construction tradition and the use of structural solutions of great projection. Thus, the use of native materials (such as lime and clay) helps to integrate the work into the landscape, and the presence of parabolic arches provides its interior with great luminosity and spatial spaciousness.
Since the beginning of the winery, the main work has been done on the local white varieties, Macabeo, Xarel·lo and Moscatell, and, more recently, other varieties such as Parellada and Chardonnay in whites, and Tempranillo and Merlot in reds. The references derived from it have been distributed and marketed, since 1987, under the Adernats brand, which has great recognition and prestige.
