Montsant, The Sacred Mountain

Rock, silence and hermit life.

Montsant is rock and silence. An imposing massif in the north of the Priorat, with steep reliefs, deep ravines and viewpoints that force you to stop. Its highest point is the Corbatera Rock, and from there the landscape is immediately understood.

And it's not just a spectacular landscape: it's a Natural Park, a protected area designed to preserve its geological, natural and cultural value. It is known as 'the sacred mountain' because of its spiritual tradition.

Fraguerau and Sant Bartomeu Gorge

If you are looking for this mixture of nature and recollection, here it is in its purest form. The park offers a tour of wonders that, more than specific points, are a clear idea: walking through forests, climbing viewpoints and linking hermitages that appear where you least expect it.

A very representative example is the Fraguerau Gorge, one of the most emblematic and spiritual spaces of Montsant, where the path takes you to the hermitage of Sant Bartomeu.

Where the rock becomes a monastery

L'Escala Dei and its legacy

To complete the sense of 'sacred mountain', Escaladei is key. The Carthusian monastery of Escaladei is located at the foot of the Montsant and was the first Carthusian monastery in the Iberian Peninsula, with a decisive role in the historical configuration of the Priorat.

Siurana, the viewpoint that orders the Priorat

Views that put it all into perspective

And if you want a view that puts it all into perspective, Siurana is a perfect enclosure. The historic complex spills out from a cliff and offers wide panoramic views of the Serra de Montsant and the surroundings of the Priorat, as well as being a reference point for hikers and climbers.
